In the Arctic Ocean, a whale research vessel discovers a Magnapinna squid, one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep. Led by Maria Boreas, the researchers capture the specimen; a huge breakthrough in marine science. But when strange and sinister events begin occuring, the captain decides to head home to Bergen, their Norwegian port town.

But home offers no safety. When a horrific murder and suicide take place onboard, some of the crew slowly realise that the creature is not only a scientific wonder, but also something far more terrifying than it appears to be.

When the borders of reality dissolve, will anyone be able to stop what has been unleashed? Will Maria be able to protect that which she loves most? Even from herself? The answers may lie centuries in the past with Dr. Virchow, a man who believes that the Black Death has shown him the worst possible horrors. A man who will be proven wrong.
